My horse at Macatoo is Rafiki, a chestnut gelding. During our first ride tonight, I notice how his coloring blends in beautifully with the Botswana sunset. As we ride through the sea grass, Rafiki turns his head, as if urging me to look at the light reflecting on the water where a young man slowly poles his mokoro and then fades into the sunset.

Expedition Log: Day 3

It is very early, and our guide leads the way into the backcountry. The sun is blistering already, and the wind barely moves the tall grass. Suddenly, our horses stop, agitated. Our guide raises his hand, signaling us to freeze. He reaches into the saddlebag and puts his hand on the rifle. My heart skips a beat when I see the three lions about 200 feet to our right. They look at us, and we look back at them. We see something with antlers darting through the bush. The lions look back at us and then decide to take the easier route: they follow the antlers.
