The sweat is pouring, and I can feel the wet spot in the middle of my back. I smell the faint sweetness of tropical flowers … and the not-so-faint scent of wild, damp fur. I look up through the canopy of trees, pierced by a solitary shaft of sunlight. Then there's a rustling in the leaves, and another, and a screech. The howler monkeys must be overhead, playing tag in the branches.
We trek through jungle vegetation en route to the Painted Cave, and the raucous birds go suddenly silent. The lead guide freezes and points down the trail. Just ahead, a jaguarundi - four feet long from nose to tail - shoots us a glance with its sharp golden eyes before daring gracefully into the forest. The birds resume their concert, and we continue our hike ... perhaps a little more slowly and cautiously than before.
